The project is underway with cable trenching commencing in mid February 2022. It is estimated to finish by 2024.
The project will start at Frankton grid exit point and move over the Shotover River into the north of Lower Shotover, and up to Speargrass Flat via Lower Shotover Road; wrapping up on the corner of Malaghans Road and Hunter Road - by Coronet Peak Zone Substation. Stop/go traffic management will be in place and move along the road as work progresses to minimise impact as much as possible.
What is the project?
Aurora Energy is upgrading the Arrowtown 33kV distribution line that runs from Frankton grid exit point (GXP) to Dalefield Zone Substation, and Coronet Peak Zone Substation. This project will include installing a new 33kV underground cable to connect Frankton GXP to Coronet Peak Zone Substation via Lower Shotover Road.
The Arrowtown line is supplied from Transpower’s Frankton GXP and supplies four zone substations (Dalefield, Coronet Peak, Arrowtown and Remarkables) that transform the voltage from 33kV to 11kV distribution. From there, 11kV cable distributes power to smaller distribution transformers.
The northern section supplies Coronet Peak ski field and residential/commercial customers from the Arrowtown and Dalefield substation. The southern section supplies the Remarkables ski field, Wye Creek hydro station and residential/commercial customers from Arrowtown substation.
Why is the upgrade needed?
Significant growth has been forecasted on the Arrowtown network. The project will not only increase the capacity to the Dalefield, Coronet Peak and Arrowtown areas; but will also reduce the risk of significant outages in the event of a high impact low probability event.
What has been completed so far?
At the Shotover Bridge, new cable ducts were installed under the bridge designed to carry both the 33kV and 11kV cables (plus fibre) over the river. To reduce costs, Aurora Energy worked with the Queenstown Lakes District Council contractors who were installing water and wastewater pipes at the same time.
Work in progress
Aurora Energy contractors Atlas will begin the cable trenching in mid-February 2022 until the end of the year.
What's coming up
Arrowtown zone substation 33kV Indoor Switchboard upgrade – to be completed by 2025. This project will replace the existing outdoor switchgear with indoor switchgear. Included in the project is reconfiguration of the existing three transformers to increase the zone substation capacity.
