There are seven major projects planned over the next six years that will reinforce the supply to the Clyde- Earnscleugh area and provide Clyde a backup supply from Alexandra.

Why is the upgrade needed?

The projects will provide additional security of supply to the customers in the area. If a section of the line is damaged or out-of-service, an alternative supply of electricity can be provided from the Alexandra Zone Substation and vice versa from the Clyde- Earnscleugh Zone Substation through the interconnecting lines.

What are the projects?

1. Mutton Town Express Feeder (2020-21)

This reinforcement project involves creating a new 11kV line between Alexandra and Clyde. This will enhance the ability of the Alexandra network to pick up load off the Clyde- Earnscleugh network during outages.

2. Clyde Township Backup Supply (2020)

The Clyde township is currently supplied from the southern end of town only. This reinforcement project will create a second supply into the town from the north. This provides an alternative supply if there is a fault, or when maintenance work is required.

There is also another project underway – the Fache Street Upgrade - that will create a ring within the Clyde township. Together, these two projects will provide a greater ability to sectionalise the supply into and within the Clyde township, and provide a backup supply to the Dairy Creek irrigation scheme.

3. Clyde Distribution Transformers Replacements (2020)

The Clyde-Earnscleugh Zone Substation that supplies the Clyde and Earnscleugh area presently operates at 6.6 kV. This project will convert the 63 transformers in the Clyde and Earnscleugh area from 6.6kV to 11kV and to enable Alexandra Zone Substation to supply the Clyde-Earnscleugh network.

4. Alexandra Zone Substation Switchgear Replacement (2020-22)

This project will replace the current switch gear with new equipment and accommodate the 11kV upgrade for the Clyde supply from Alexandra.

5. Letts Gully-Springvale Road (2021-22)

This reinforcement project will install a new 1.2 km cable from Dunstan Road to Letts Gully Road; and extend a section of the line on Letts Gully Road to connect the line on Springvale Road into the 11kV Dairy Creek cable. This means the section will be converted to accommodate the 11kV upgrade.

6. Clyde-Earnscleugh Zone Substation Rebuild (2024-25)

The equipment in the Clyde- Earnscleugh Zone Substation has come to end-of-life and needs to be replaced. The current zone substation is located on the Earnscleugh side of the river. The new zone substation will be built on a different site and will accommodate the reinforcement required for the 11kV conversion.

7. Earnscleugh Road (2025-26)

This reinforcement project will replace part of overhead line to accommodate the 11kV upgrade and provide connection to Alexandra substation.
