There are six major projects planned to take place between 2020-2026 that will reinforce the supply to the Clyde-Earnscleugh area, and provide Clyde a backup supply from Alexandra.
Why is the upgrade needed?
The projects will provide additional security of supply to the customers in the area. If a section of the line is damaged or out-of-service, an alternative supply of electricity can be provided from the Alexandra Zone Substation and vice versa from the Clyde-Earnscleugh Zone Substation through the interconnecting lines.
What are the projects?
1. Mutton Town Express Feeder (2020-21) (COMPLETED)
This reinforcement project involved creating a new 11kV line between Alexandra and Clyde. This will enhance the ability of the Alexandra network to pick up load off the Clyde-Earnscleugh network during outages.
2. Clyde Township Backup Supply & Distribution Transformers Replacements (2020 – 2021) (COMPLETED)
The Clyde township is currently supplied from the southern end of town only. This reinforcement project created a second supply into the town from the north. This is able to provide an alternative supply if there is a fault, or when maintenance work is required.
The Clyde-Earnscleugh Zone Substation that supplies the Clyde and Earnscleugh area previously operated at 6.6kV. This project converted the 63 transformers in the Clyde and Earnscleugh area from 6.6kV to 11kV, and enabled the Alexandra Zone Substation to supply the Clyde-Earnscleugh network.
There is also another project (the Fache Street Upgrade) that will create a ring within the Clyde township. Together, these projects will provide a greater ability to sectionalise the supply into and within the Clyde township, and provide a backup supply to the Dairy Creek irrigation scheme.
3. Alexandra Zone Substation Switchgear Replacement (2020 – 2022) (ONGOING)
This project will replace the current switch gear with new equipment and accommodate the 11kV upgrade for the Clyde supply from Alexandra.
4. Letts Gully-Springvale Road (2021 – 2022) (IN PROGRESS)
This reinforcement project will install a new 11kV circuit from Dunstan Road to Letts Gully Road. An extension of the existing overhead network on Letts Gully Road will connect it onto Springvale Road. Some of the Springvale Road network will then be fed from a different supply point, the 11 kV Dairy Creek cable. This means the upgrade will enable this section of network to be converted to 11kV, and provide another back-up supply from Alexandra Zone Substation, catering for now and future demand growth.
5. Clyde-Earnscleugh Zone Substation Rebuild (now Dunstan Zone Substation) (2024 – 2025) (UPCOMING)
The equipment in the Clyde-Earnscleugh Zone Substation has come to end-of-life and needs to be replaced. The current zone substation is located on the Earnscleugh side of the river. The new zone substation (Dunstan) will be built initially to supply the Data Centre, and will expand (2024 – 2025) to supply Clyde and Earnscleugh area.
6. Earnscleugh Road (2025 – 2026) (UPCOMING)
This reinforcement project will replace part of overhead line to accommodate the 11kV upgrade and provide connection to Alexandra substation.
