The project commenced in November 2020 and will take place in stages, and work is scheduled to be completed by early to mid-2021.
The project will take place at Outram Zone Substation.
What is the project?
Aurora Energy is upgrading the Outram zone substation. The existing transformers and associated equipment have reached their end-of-life cycle and need to be replaced.
The existing Outram Zone Substation was constructed in 1932 and was upgraded in 1964. The zone substation is a large supplier of electricity in Dunedin and converts high voltage electricity at 33 kV from the Waipori A, B & C overhead lines into a lower voltage of 11kV for distribution around Outram and the Taieri plain including the Dunedin International Airport.
The existing switch gear will be decommissioned, and a new switchroom will be built next to the current switchroom, and new gear installed. The two existing transformers will also be removed and replaced with a new, higher rating transformer. The project will also require a new fence to be built.
Why is the upgrade needed?
This work will not only replace ageing equipment but strengthen the electricity supply to around Outram and the Taieri plain.
