We are undergrounding a section of the network in St Bathans to improve safety and reliability of the local community’s power supply.
WHAT HAS HAPPENED SO FAR?
We undertook consultation with the St Bathans Community Association and a community meeting was held on 5 October 2019. The community was in favour of undergrounding the current electricity poles and power lines in a stretch of Saint Bathans Loop Road - from number 1650 to 1291. Given the archaeological significance of the area we have been working closely with Heritage New Zealand and Origin Consultants Limited (specialist archaeological consultants) throughout the duration of the project.
WORK COMPLETED IN 2021 SO FAR
We have been busy completing the design of the project and obtaining the necessary consent to undertake the work on private property. The preparation stage is now complete and we have started the construction phase, and the installation of cables and cable ducts in the road reserve area of the township was completed in May and early June led by our Central Otago based contractors Connetics.
UPCOMING WORK - JUNE 2021
Now that the underground supply to each property is complete, we will begin removing the existing overhead infrastructure. This will happen mid-June led by Connetics – who will be remove the overhead power lines and the five power poles (#18100, #18098, #31466, #18093, #86799).
The power pole located outside of the Vulcan Hotel (#33199) will remain until the civil defence siren is transferred to the Vulcan Hotel. Poles #18096 and #45099 that have streetlights #1676 and #1675 will also remain until the new heritage style streetlights arrive - scheduled for September 2021. There are also a number of Chorus owned steel railway poles on St Bathans Loop Road we have been asked to leave by the community.
We appreciate this has been a long process, and we thank the St Bathans community for their goodwill and patience.
