Be prepared for storm in Otago
08 Jun 2015
A severe weather warning is in place for Otago today. North-westerly gales are expected to become severe in exposed places late Tuesday morning, especially about inland areas. Heavy rain is also expected for the Otago headwaters during Monday and early Tuesday.
Aurora Energy says the public should be aware that strong winds and heavy rains can create potential electricity-related hazards, and be prepared for the possibility of power outages. Vegetation and debris can blow into overhead lines and can take out power during severe storms.
In particular, people should:
- Always keep well clear of fallen power lines or damaged electrical equipment and treat them as live at all times
- Watch out for falling tree branches as these can cause damage to power lines
- Avoid possible damage to electrical appliances (in the unlikely event there is a power surge when the power is restored) by switching off appliances at the wall
- Be prepared for power outages. Make sure you have adequate food supplies, warm clothing and bedding, torch and spare batteries, battery radio and an alternative source of heating and cooking.
People using medical equipment that relies on electricity should ensure they are prepared for power disruptions and if there is an immediate health threat, contact their health provider or call 111.
Aurora Energy will work hard to restore power as quickly as is safely possible in the event of storm-related damage. The safety of the public and lines crews is of primary importance at all times.
