Connect large-scale power generation

If you’re installing large-scale solar, hydro or wind power generators and have a reliable power source or you have excess power to feed back into the grid, we can help.

Get started with an installer

  • 1 Get started with an installer

  • 3 We review your application
  • 4 Installing your system
  • 5 Your system is now connected

If you are installing equipment that will generate more than 10 kW of electricity, this is the process to connect it to our network. We will make sure it's safely connected for you and our contractors.

This process is different from a small-scale system as our planning team has to check that your system will not create any issues for our network.

The first thing you need to do is get in touch with a supplier or installer. Get a quote from them and make sure your selected power generation is right for what you want to use it for.

Once you've agreed on the right solution for your needs your installer will contact an Authorised Network Inspector and submit a request for connection on your behalf.

Your responsibilities

Get in touch with a Distributed Generation Installer to work out which system best suits your needs

Work with you to put together a quote and advise you what’s involved

Step 2/5

  • 1 Get started with an installer
  • 2 Installer speaks to an Approved Service Provider/Authorised Network Inspector
  • 3 We review your application
  • 4 Installing your system
  • 5 Your system is now connected

You've agreed on the right power generation system for your needs.

Now you need an Approved Service Provider/Authorised Network Inspector. Most installers have an existing relationship with our Authorised Network Inspectors and will get in touch with their preferred one. The Authorised Network Inspector works with your installer to ensure your power generation system is connected safely to our network.

Distributed Generation Installer's responsibilities

Provide the required information to the Authorised Network Inspector to ensure it's captured in your application to connect

Authorised Network Inspector's responsibilities

Work with your installer to gather the information required as part of the connection approval process

Complete your application form to connect to our network

Step 3/5

We review your application

  • 1 Get started with an installer
  • 2 Installer speaks to an Approved Service Provider/Authorised Network Inspector
  • 3 We review your application
  • 4 Installing your system
  • 5 Your system is now connected

Our planning team looks at your application to see what else we need for technical approval.

You or your installer will hear from our team to let you know what details they need. This could include:

  • Network and design requirements
  • Constraints
  • Operational procedures

Timeframes

If your system is:

  • More than 10 kW but less than 1 MW, it will take 45 working days
  • More than 1 MW but less than 5 MW, it will take 60 working days
  • More than 5 MW, it will take 80 working days

Distributed Generation Installer's responsibilities

Speak with our planning team if they need more information to progress your application

Aurora Energy's responsibilities

Our Planning team may get in touch with your installer if they need more information to approve your application

Once all information is assessed and your system is compliant, meets the safety requirements and there are no congestion issues, we will grant technical approval

Step 4/5

Installing your system

  • 1 Get started with an installer
  • 2 Installer speaks to an Approved Service Provider/Authorised Network Inspector
  • 3 We review your application
  • 4 Installing your system
  • 5 Your system is now connected

Depending on your retailer (who you pay your bill to) the order of this step may change.

Let your electricity retailer know you're installing a large-scale power generation system and get their buy-back rate agreement. They will book someone to install a meter that records the import and export of power if the Authorised Network Inspector doesn't do this.

Your equipment is installed and then checked for compliance and safety requirements.

Your responsibilities

Get in touch with your electricity retailer to let them know when the power generation system will be installed

Sign an agreement with your retailer on power buy-back rates

Distributed Generation Installer's responsibilities

Install the power generation equipment

Authorised Network Inspector's responsibilities

Check the installation meets network safety and compliance requirements

Install the new meter (if they do this)

Electricity retailer’s responsibilities

Provide you with an agreement on power buy-back rates

Organise a metering agent to install a new meter

Metering agent’s responsibilities

Install the new meter (if the Authorised Network Inspector does not do this)

Step 5/5

Your system is now connected

  • 1 Get started with an installer
  • 2 Installer speaks to an Approved Service Provider/Authorised Network Inspector
  • 3 We review your application
  • 4 Installing your system
  • 5 Your system is now connected

Your power generation system is installed and all safety and compliance checks have been made. You're almost done!

This last step makes sure everyone has the correct paperwork and your power generation system is switched on and ready for use.

If you're ready to register your interest to connect to the Aurora Energy network (and have selected your approved contractor for electricity connections or your network approved inspector for distributed generation connections) you can register your interest here.
