Aurora Energy's Harbour Crossing Project Shortlisted for Second Community Award

18 November 2022
Last year, six lattice towers and overhead lines running between Port Chalmers and Portobello were replaced with underground cables, in a project that won lines company Aurora Energy two awards at the 2022 New Zealand Energy Excellence Awards.

Aurora Energy Chief Executive Dr Richard Fletcher said he was pleased this once-in-a-lifetime project has received more recognition, by being shortlisted for the Infrastructure New Zealand Community Outcomes Award (projects under $20 million) at the Building Nations 2050 Impact Awards.

“We’re very proud of this project as the benefits have been so tangible, especially the birdlife returning to Quarantine Island Kamau Taurua since the overhead wires were removed, as well as removing height restrictions for ships coming into the Harbour.

The community relationships we built throughout the project all contributed to its success, and we share our achievements with them,” Dr Fletcher said.

The Community Outcomes Award recognises outstanding projects that deliver for their communities, enrich lives and centre equitable outcomes for all New Zealanders. The awards night will be held in Wellington on 22 November.
