Locals urged to have their say on Queenstown’s electricity future – consultation closing soon
12 September 2025Transpower, Aurora Energy and PowerNet are inviting community feedback by Friday 19 September on proposed options to upgrade the electricity transmission infrastructure that supplies Queenstown. These upgrades are essential to meet Queenstown’s ambition to become the world’s most electrified destination.
Any new transmission infrastructure will have an impact on power bills, so it’s important the community takes the opportunity to understand the options and have their say.
While alternative solutions like solar and batteries could defer investment, ultimately new infrastructure is still needed and doing nothing is not an option.
The current transmission system can meet demand until around 2030–2032, and planning now ensures a resilient and secure electricity supply from the national electricity grid through to 2050 and beyond.
The Energising Queenstown consultation outlines four potential solutions, each with different costs, benefits, and impacts.
More information, including how to make a submission, is available at: www.energisingqueenstown.co.nz
Public consultation closes on 19 September 2025
