Power boost for Dunedin Central and Roslyn

Aurora Energy has completed a major upgrade to the Smith Street zone substation, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the electricity network for Dunedin Central and Roslyn.

The project delivers long-term benefits for around 2,800 customers, with improved reliability, greater resilience by providing more back-up options during extreme weather events, and capacity to support future growth in the area. The upgrade involved replacing the existing substation with an earthquake-strengthened building, constructing a new switchroom, and installing modern electrical equipment to ensure a safer, more secure, supply.

“This is a great outcome for the Dunedin community,” said Richard Starkey, Aurora Energy’s General Manager Service Delivery. “We’re investing in infrastructure that not only meets today’s needs, but also supports the city’s future, as demand for electricity increases due to more people switching to electric vehicles and appliances.”

It also connects with the Smith Street to Willowbank cable intertie project, which includes 2.5km of underground ducting and a new 33 kV cable linking the two substations. Together, these upgrades form a ring network that improves security of supply and reduces the risk of significant outages for 5,900 customers.

The Smith Street upgrade is part of Aurora Energy’s wider $560 million investment programme across Dunedin, Central Otago/Wānaka, and Queenstown.
