Road closures along SH1 (Crawford St and Queens Gardens)

19 May 2025
Aurora Energy is making important upgrades to the electricity network in Dunedin’s CBD, by installing a 480m underground duct so two new cables can be laid.

This will run along Rattray Street, from Dowling Street to Vogel Street at Queens Gardens. Traffic management will be in place while the work is being done, with some temporary road closures needed.

From Sunday 25 May to Tuesday 27 May, there will be road closures at night from 8pm – 6am along SH1 (Crawford Street and Queens Gardens).

Detours via Princes Street and Dowling Street will be clearly signposted for light vehicles. Aurora Energy asks that heavy vehicles please detour via the Cumberland Street overbridge (SH1 – Jetty Street – Wharf Street – Thomas Burns Road – SH88 – SH1).

Works may further extend to the nights of Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 May. Should this be necessary, Aurora Energy will provide an update.

Aurora Energy asks for anyone travelling to please obey all traffic management signs and instructions, and thanks customers and those driving in the area for their patience while this important work is being carried out.

During July, further traffic management will be needed around Dowling Street while the first of the two cables is laid. Information about traffic management and road closures will be shared closer to the time. The second cable will be laid in future years as part of Aurora Energy’s ten-year Asset Management Plan, with the ducting being done now to create efficiencies and reduce future costs.
