Stage One Complete on Central Dunedin Cable Upgrade

18 April 2019
Stage one of the Smith Street project has been successfully completed today.

Aurora Energy’s General Manager Asset Management and Planning Glenn Coates said the completion of stage one was a significant milestone for the project.

“Crews secured the final set of cable ducts on Taieri Road this morning,” Mr Coates said.

“The second stage of the project will involve 21 kilometres of new high voltage cable being pulled through the ducts in sections.

“The work we are carrying out is the first stage of Aurora Energy’s $5.6 million project to install a new subtransmission cable from Halfway Bush to the Smith Street substation.”

These will run from the Halfway Bush Grid Exit Point Substation along Taieri Road, up and over Stuart Street to the Smith Street Substation.

Work for stage two will begin immediately after Easter, on Tuesday 23 April, outside of Moana Pool.

Mr Coates urged drivers to keep safe and drive to the conditions while traffic management was in place.

Aurora Energy is progressively upgrading the older, gas-insulated subtransmission cables that supply central Dunedin to modern cables with solid insulation to ensure reliable electricity supply into the future.
